Take It Light: Chapter 3, “Run to Keep from Hiding”

A loud noise woke her up.

“Libby! Are you in there?” Jamie banged his fist on the bedroom door. “Libby!”

Electric fear sat her bolt upright. It was the morning … after.

“Libby! Are you in there? Open the door!”

Dion was sleeping through it, or he appeared to be. Libby lightly touched his shoulder, and he opened one eye.

“Jamie’s at the door!” she whispered urgently.

Dion turned over and stretched. “Want me to take care of it?” he asked.

She nodded in wide-eyed panic. He got up, wrapped the sheet around his waist, and opened the door.

“Can I help you?” Dion asked.

“Is Libby in there?” Jamie’s voice was shaking.

“Yes, she is.” Dion paused, then added, “You got a problem with that?”

Jamie didn’t answer.

Dion closed the door, and came back to bed.

After a minute that seemed like an hour, Libby whispered, “I have to talk to him.” Dion was already asleep. She got up, put her clothes on, and tip-toed out of the room.

* * *

She found Jamie sitting on the front porch steps. He hid his face in his hands but he was obviously sobbing, and very angry.

“I’m sorry” was all she could think to say. “I’m sorry, Jamie. I’m sorry.”

He said nothing, just continued to sob.

Libby took the Purple Heart out of her pocket and offered it to him.

Jamie grabbed it from her and threw it down. Then he ran, till she could’t see him anymore.

Libby left the Purple Heart on the sidewalk where it was, shattered.
